When a “short circuiting “develops in the heart’s rhythm, a pacemaker signals the heart to beat when the heartbeat is too slow. A generator is a small computer chip in a metal case that contains electronic circuitry and a battery. The leads are insulated wires that are connected to the generator on one end, with the other end placed inside one of the heart’s chambers. The lead senses the heart’s electrical activity and helps control the heart rate by acting as a backup if the rate drops below a determined threshold.
